The Mouse and His Child was his first book and is now half a century old. Hoban was born in 1925, quietly redefining the novel with genre-bending, speculative fiction over a career that spanned sixty years until his death in 2011. “He had no idea what a mother might be,” Hoban writes, “but he knew that he needed one, badly.” “Are you my mama?” the child says to the clockwork elephant standing next to him. As we move inside the shop the toys begin to speak to each other. The father dances around in a circle, swinging his son up and down. He watches as toys are taken out of a doll’s house for display – an elephant, a seal and then two clockwork mice, a father and son. The Mouse and His Child begins with a tramp (the book’s only human character) looking through the window of a toyshop on Christmas Eve. As I sat on it and read Russell Hoban’s book, I thought about my family. It reminded me of living with my sisters, of the posters on the wall and the dusty globe on the shelf. It was uncomfortable and covered in stains, but it was a fixture in family pictures of the house I grew up in – a grainy bit of furniture in the background, sat next to a bookshelf and a little wooden seesaw. I spent my evenings reading on an old, yellow sofa my mother gave me when I left home. I was a 26-year-old living by myself when I first read The Mouse and His Child.

What would you do if you woke up and discovered your whole life is just a memory someone else lived? I picked this novel as a free monthly book as a Prime member but it sat unread in my kindle for almost a year. The premise is basic, human cloning with memory transfer has been made workable, but the company owning the technology charges millions for the procedure. This novel is far to complex to say much without giving spoilers. Because only one thing has become clear: Con is being marked for murder - all over again. On the run, she needs someone she can trust. To uncover the truth, Con is retracing the last days she can recall, crossing paths with a detective who’s just as curious. The secrets of Con’s disorienting new life are buried deep. When Con wakes up in the clinic, it’s eighteen months later. For young Constance “Con” D’Arcy, who was gifted her own clone by her late aunt, it’s terrifying.Īfter a routine monthly upload of her consciousness - stored for that inevitable transition - something goes wrong. To anticloning militants, it’s an abomination against nature. For the wealthy, cheating death is the ultimate luxury. In the near future, advances in medicine and quantum computing make human cloning a reality. A breakthrough in human cloning becomes one woman’s waking nightmare in a mind-bending thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Gibson Vaughn series. Dreamsnake was only the third book featuring a female protagonist to earn the Hugo. McIntyre was recognized for her efforts, as Dreamsnake won the Hugo in 1978, and the Nebula in 1979. To write a story with a dynamic heroine, systematic gender equality, nonexistent rape culture, uninhibited casual sex, homosexuality, and polygamy, was and still is an incredible feat. In the 70s, McIntyre witnessed both the women’s liberation movement and the rapid development of genetic knowledge and technology. McIntyre based the novel on her novelette, “Of Mist, Grass, and Sand,” for which she received the Nebula in 1973, and a Hugo nomination in 1974. A spellbinding, down-the-rabbit-hole tale of loneliness and belonging, creativity and agency, and friendship and desire, Bunny is the dazzlingly original second book from an author whose work has been described as "honest, searing and necessary" (Elle). Samantha Heather Mackey is the single outsider among her fiction cohort at Warren University, which is populated by Bunnies.
